Ask the video a question.
Skip the scrubbing. Ask what was said about a topic, or which questions came from the audience, and get the answer with a reference to the moment it was said.
Every line leads back to the recording.
The text scrolls along as the audio plays, the recording is split into topics with timestamps, and words Klang is unsure about are flagged, so checking a quote or a name takes seconds.
Send it where it is needed.
Turn decisions and follow-ups into ToDos, share the transcript with your team in a folder, or save the result to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox automatically.
All integrationsHow to transcribe a video to text
Transcribing a video means turning everything that is said in it into written text: for reading, quoting, searching, translating or subtitling. You can type it out yourself, use the captions a platform generates, or use a transcription tool. Which is right depends on how long the video is, how many people speak, and what you need the text for.
Three ways to get text from a video
Typing it yourself is free and slow: expect four to six hours of work per hour of video with clear speech, more with several speakers. Platform captions, such as those YouTube, Teams or Zoom generate, cost nothing extra but usually lack speaker names, are hard to export in a useful format, and only exist for videos on that platform.
A transcription tool works on any file, separates the speakers, keeps timestamps, and exports to the formats you need. With Klang, you upload the file or paste a link and have a transcript to check minutes later.
Transcript or subtitles: which do you need?
They contain the same words but are built for different jobs. A transcript groups speech into readable paragraphs per speaker, which is what you want for notes, quotes, research and documentation. Subtitles split speech into short timed segments that fit on screen, which is what a video player or editor needs.
In Klang you choose the format before transcribing, and you can export subtitles as SRT (supported by almost every video editor and platform) or VTT (for web players).
Get a better transcript from any video
Transcription quality follows audio quality. If you are recording the video yourself, these make the biggest difference:
- Use an external or lapel microphone rather than the camera's built-in one.
- Turn off background music while people speak, or add it afterwards.
- Let one person speak at a time; overlapping speech is the hardest part for any transcriber.
- If you know the language, set it instead of leaving it on Automatic, especially for short clips.
- Set the number of speakers when voices are similar, so they are separated correctly.
Supported files and languages
Klang accepts MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI video, and MP3, WAV, M4A and other audio formats, up to 10 GB per file. You can upload several files at once, or import a public YouTube video by its link.
Klang transcribes English and the major European languages, including German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Polish and the Nordic languages, as well as Japanese and others. Videos where speakers switch language are transcribed in the language actually spoken when the setting is on Automatic.
What to do with the text
A transcript makes a video searchable, quotable and reusable. Teams use it to write a blog post or newsletter from a webinar, to pull quotes from a recorded interview, to document a training session, or to make a lecture accessible. Because Klang keeps every transcript in one searchable place, you can also ask questions across many videos at once, for example every recorded customer webinar from the last quarter.
Video to text, compared
The three common ways, side by side:
| Type it yourself | Platform captions | Klang | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time per hour of video | Four to six hours | None, if the platform made them | Minutes, plus your review |
| Works on any file | Yes | Only videos on that platform | Yes, up to 10 GB per file |
| Speaker names | If you add them | Rarely | Yes, separated per speaker |
| Export formats | Whatever you type in | Limited | Word, TXT, SRT, VTT, CSV, JSON and more |
| Summary and Q&A | No | No | Yes, with links to the moment it was said |
Frequently asked questions
How do I transcribe a video to text?
Upload the video file to Klang, or paste a YouTube link, choose transcript or subtitles, and wait for the processing to finish. Then play it back with the text scrolling along, check the words Klang has flagged, correct what needs correcting and export it.
Is it free?
Yes. Klang's free plan includes unlimited transcription and file uploads. Speaker identification, integrations and scheduled analyses are part of Pro, which you can try free for seven days.
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI, up to 10 GB per file. Audio formats such as MP3, WAV and M4A work too.
Can I transcribe a YouTube video?
Yes. Paste the link to a public YouTube video and Klang imports and transcribes it, so you do not need to download the file first. Private, unlisted and live videos cannot be imported.
Can I create subtitles from a video?
Yes. Choose the Subtitles format before transcribing and export the result as SRT or VTT, which most video editors and web players accept.
