The honest comparison

A Plaud alternative without another device to carry

Plaud turned the voice recorder into an AI note taker, and its hardware is genuinely good. If you would rather use the phone already in your pocket, have the same notes for online meetings, and not count transcription minutes, Klang is the other way to do it.

Records on your iPhone or Android phone, in the room and on calls

Free plan with unlimited transcription

Online meetings too: Klang joins Teams, Zoom and Google Meet

From conversation to notes, with the phone you have

  1. Install the app

Download Klang for iPhone or Android and sign in. There is nothing to pair, charge or carry beyond your phone.

  2. Record anything

Put the phone on the table for an in-person meeting or interview, or record incoming and outgoing calls. For online meetings, let Klang's assistant join the call.

  3. Read the notes

The recording is transcribed with speaker labels and a summary, synced to your workspace, and searchable together with everything else you have recorded.

Plaud vs Klang, in detail

Plaud sells AI voice recorders with a subscription for transcription and summaries. Klang is software: a phone and desktop app plus a meeting assistant. Both turn conversations into notes; they differ in what you carry, what you pay for and what else they record. Plaud facts below are from its own pricing page and security help article, read on 19 October 2026.

What Plaud does well

A dedicated recorder is always ready, does not drain your phone and can sit discreetly on a table or clip to clothing. Plaud's devices include its free Starter plan, its pricing page lists more than 112 supported languages, and it lists ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and HIPAA compliance. Plaud's help centre says EU and EEA accounts are hosted on AWS in Frankfurt.

Why people look for an alternative

The reasons that come up most:

  • Another device: a recorder is one more thing to buy, charge, carry and remember, when most people already have a phone with a good microphone.
  • Minutes to count: Plaud's Starter plan includes 300 transcription minutes a month and Pro 1,200; unlimited transcription is a separate, higher tier.
  • Online meetings: a recorder in the room is a different setup from an assistant that joins Teams, Zoom or Google Meet for you.
  • Team knowledge: shared folders and analysis across many people's conversations matter more as a team grows.

Where Klang is different

Klang records on the phone you already have, for in-person conversations and for incoming and outgoing calls, and its assistant joins your online meetings. Everything ends up in one workspace that you can share with your team and search across.

The free plan includes unlimited transcription. Data is processed and stored in the EU, encrypted at rest with workspace-specific keys, never used to train AI, and Klang is ISO 27001:2022 certified. Organisations with stricter requirements can run Klang single-tenant with their own keys, or on-premise.

When a dedicated recorder still makes sense

If you record all day away from a desk, cannot use your phone during conversations, or need a recorder that clips to your clothing, a device like Plaud's is a fair choice. If your conversations happen in meetings, on calls and on the phone in your pocket, an app avoids the extra hardware.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Plaud alternative?

If you would rather not carry a separate recorder, Klang records on your iPhone or Android phone, records calls, and joins your online meetings, with unlimited transcription on the free plan. If you need a wearable device that works without a phone, a dedicated recorder remains the better fit.

Can my phone replace an AI voice recorder?

For most meetings and interviews, yes. Place the phone in the middle of the table, keep it away from laptops and noise, and the Klang app records, transcribes and summarises the conversation.

Can Klang record phone calls?

Yes. The Klang mobile app records incoming and outgoing calls and transcribes them by the time you hang up, with speaker labels and a summary. Phone call transcription is part of the Pro plan.

Is there a limit on transcription?

No. Klang's free plan includes unlimited transcription and unlimited digital meetings.

Where is my data stored?

In the EU. Klang encrypts data at rest with workspace-specific keys, never uses it to train AI, is ISO 27001:2022 certified and signs a data processing agreement.
