Does Android support call recording?
Google says call recording works only on certain devices and carriers, with current software, in supported countries or regions. Pixel and non-Pixel requirements also differ.
When Google’s Phone app records, participants are notified. Manufacturers may provide their own controls, so instructions for one Android phone may not match another.
Official device guidance: Google HelpCheck your phone before the call
01
Look in the Phone app settings
Open Phone, Settings and Call recording. If the option is absent, do not assume an unofficial app can bypass device, carrier or regional restrictions safely.
02
Run a short test
Confirm that both sides are audible, the notice plays, the file is saved and you can export it. Never discover a limitation after an irreplaceable interview.
03
Use a meeting or an existing file
For planned conversations, a recorded meeting may be more reliable. If you already have a permitted audio file, upload it directly for transcription.
Record the call with Klang
Klang's mobile app can record incoming and outgoing calls and transcribes them when you hang up, with speaker labels and a quick summary. Open the app and follow its phone-call instructions after completing the consent and privacy checks below.
Read Klang's phone-call recording guideFor an in-person conversation: use a voice recorder
A phone call and a room recording are different workflows. For an interview in the same room, use Voice Memos on iPhone or a recorder app on Android instead of trying to record a call.
Make a short test, put the phone between the speakers, switch off avoidable notifications and keep the original audio. Voice Memos exports a rendered M4A file that you can upload for transcription.
Before you record a call
Recording rules depend on where every participant is and why you are recording. Tell everyone before recording, obtain the permission your situation requires, and stop if anyone objects.
A work recording can contain personal, confidential or regulated information. Decide the purpose, access and deletion date before you start, and ask your legal or privacy owner when the material is sensitive.
Turn the recording into searchable text
Once you have an audio file you are allowed to process, the device no longer matters. Use this workflow:
- 1. Save or export the original recording.
- 2. Confirm that you may upload and process it.
- 3. Upload the audio file to Klang.
- 4. Review names, numbers and important quotations against the audio.
- 5. Export the transcript or turn it into a summary and to-dos.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t my Android phone record calls?
Support varies by device, Phone app, carrier, software version and region. A missing control can be an intentional restriction.
Are participants notified?
Google’s Phone app notifies participants when recording starts. Other apps and manufacturers can behave differently, so test and inform people yourself.
Can Klang transcribe an Android call recording?
Yes, if you can export the recording and have the right to process it. Upload the file and verify important details against the audio.
