How to record a phone call on iPhone in 2026

Fact-checked 17 September 2026. Apple offers call recording in the Phone app in selected countries and regions, but says the feature is currently unavailable in the European Union and several other regions. Check Apple’s current iPhone guide before an important call instead of assuming that a new phone or iOS update enables it.

This guide explains how the built-in feature works where available, which alternatives are reasonable when it is not, and how an allowed recording becomes searchable text.

How Apple’s built-in call recording works

Where Apple supports the feature, you can open More during a one-to-one call and choose Call Recording. Both participants hear an audio notice. The iPhone saves the recording in Notes, and supported regions and languages may also receive a transcript.

Apple explicitly warns that an automatic transcript may contain errors. Verify names, numbers and quotations against the audio before relying on it.

Why the recording button may be missing

Availability depends on region, language and software support. Apple currently lists the European Union among the regions where call recording is unavailable. A tutorial written for another country is therefore not proof that the same button should appear on your iPhone.

Do not change account regions or install an unknown app simply to bypass a restriction. Third-party services vary in carrier support, recording notices, storage location, retention and privacy terms.

Practical alternatives

Record the call with Klang's mobile app

Klang's mobile app can record incoming and outgoing calls and transcribes them when you hang up, with speaker labels and a quick summary. Open the app and follow its phone-call instructions after checking the consent and privacy requirements for your situation. See Klang's current phone-call recording guide for the supported workflow.

Move a planned conversation to an online meeting

For a scheduled interview or customer call, Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams may provide a clearer recording workflow. Availability still depends on the host, licence, administrator settings and participant notice, so test it before the real conversation.

Use Voice Memos for an in-person interview

A phone call and a conversation in the same room are different workflows. For an in-person interview, use Voice Memos or another approved recorder, place the phone between the speakers and make a short test. Apple lets you share a rendered M4A file from Voice Memos, which can then be uploaded for transcription.

Transcribe an existing, permitted file

If you already have an audio file you are allowed to process, keep the original and upload it to transcribe audio to text. Review the output against the audio, then export the transcript or turn it into a summary and to-dos.

Before you record

Recording rules depend on where every participant is and why you are recording. Tell everyone before the recording starts, obtain the permission your situation requires, and stop if anyone objects.

A work recording can contain personal, confidential or regulated information. Decide the purpose, who can access it and when it will be deleted before you begin. Ask your legal or privacy owner when the material is sensitive or participants are in different countries.

A reliable recording-to-transcript workflow

  1. Confirm that participants are informed and the recording is permitted.
  2. Make a short test and check both voices.
  3. Save or export the original audio file.
  4. Upload it to Klang and identify the speakers.
  5. Verify names, figures and important quotations against the audio.
  6. Export the transcript or create structured notes.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see the call-recording button?

The feature depends on region, language and software support. Apple currently excludes the European Union and other listed regions.

Does Apple notify the other person?

Yes. With Apple’s built-in feature, both participants hear that recording has started. Inform people yourself as well; an operating-system notice is not a substitute for your own legal and privacy checks.

Can Klang transcribe an iPhone recording?

Yes. Export an audio file you have the right to process, upload it to Klang, then verify important details against the original recording.
