What Otter does well

Otter is a mature product with real-time transcription, live captions, meeting summaries and an assistant that joins calls. For teams that work in one of its six languages and are comfortable with a US provider, it is a reasonable default, which is exactly why it is the benchmark to compare against.

Why teams look for an alternative

Three reasons come up again and again:

• Language: Otter lists English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese (Simplified). Its help page does not list Swedish, Dutch, Italian or Portuguese transcription. Check the exact spoken language; translating an existing transcript is a different capability.
• Account fit: confirm which import allowance, export formats and sharing controls are included in the plan you will actually use. A good result from one short demo does not establish fit for a month of recordings.
• Workflow: both products offer ways to search and analyze conversations. Otter documents cross-conversation AI Chat and connected-app actions. Compare the particular outputs, evidence links and permissions you need instead of assuming one product stops at a single meeting.

Where Klang differs

Klang is built in Sweden and processes all data in Europe, with a data processing agreement, ISO 27001:2022 certification and a commitment that your conversations are never used to train AI. For organizations with stricter requirements, Klang also runs on-premise, fully offline if needed.

Transcription covers more than 40 languages with automatic speaker separation, and every sentence links to its place in the recording. Beyond the single meeting, Klang analyzes across conversations: ask questions over months of meetings, or build structured reports from exactly the sources you choose, with every claim citing the moment it comes from.

Switch one recording before moving your archive

Start with one approved recording while keeping your current account intact. Test upload, corrections and export before moving a backlog. A file transfer does not automatically carry over comments, sharing permissions, highlights or an existing folder structure.

Compare the free-plan limits that affect your recording

Otter's published Basic limits are 300 minutes per month, 30 minutes per conversation and three audio/video file imports per account, not per month. Basic text exports are TXT; other export formats require an eligible paid plan. Confirm current account details before relying on a limit during a deadline.

For a 48-minute interview, a 30-minute accessible transcript is not a finished result. For a backlog, count both files and minutes. Klang's pricing page lists transcription and audio/video uploads in its free plan; evaluate that workflow on a complete recording and inspect the current conditions.

Compare paid plans only after identifying a constraint. Word lists, increased speed or another recurring requirement may justify Pro in Klang. A switch should solve a specific task; it should not depend on a claim that one AI is universally more accurate.

Export from Otter before you change your workflow

Otter documents an Export action inside a conversation. Save the text format your plan allows and, when permitted, the audio export as MP3. Shared conversations may need export permission. Keep the original downloads until you have checked the destination.

Upload the audio to Klang to make a new transcript. Treat it as a fresh transcription: it will not reproduce manual corrections or other annotations from your Otter document automatically. Retain the old text as a reference and check a sample of names, figures and timestamps against the recording.

For every file, record the old title, audio filename, exported-text filename and new location. Check that the beginning and ending are present. Do not cancel or delete the old account as a substitute for confirming that the material you need has been preserved.

When local Whisper is a different kind of alternative

A local Whisper installation may suit a person who needs speech-to-text on their own machine and can manage the setup and review. It is not a drop-in replacement for a hosted meeting workspace. Check speaker handling, exports and collaboration separately.

Klang's standard service is hosted and needs an internet connection. Choose it only if uploading your recordings is acceptable. If your requirement is strictly offline, start with a verified local workflow rather than an ordinary cloud signup.
